Welcome

Greetings everyone!

The Board of Governors met on March 21, 2010 to review the winter’s events and plan the club’s 2010 activities. The schedule of events will, as usual, offer something for everyone. Suzanne Decrow and Martha Massey have graciously accepted the task of organizing the newly established Events Committee. The club can always use volunteer help with the numerous annual activities and if you’d like to be more involved please contact Suzanne or Martha.

This year should be a great one for the Deer Isle Yacht Club. The Club is in excellent shape and I look forward to the season with great excitement.

The floats and ramps were in the water for Memorial Day. I’d like to thank both Scott Miscione and Loring Kydd for their efforts in protecting these valuable assets. The Board of Governors has decided again to place a float for sailing dinghies in the Cove. This float is designed for small boats to be conveniently stored out of the way and easily accessed. Please make sure your dinghies are properly marked with name and numbers.

For those members with moorings in the Cove, you should have seen a mooring survey and maintenance form in your dues notice. This season the Club has begun a more coordinated approach to annual mooring maintenance. This more formalized approach will lower the cost and provide members with an easy way to maintain their ground tackle. Over 35 members have submitted mooring survey forms, Summer 2010 however only 10 have signed up for Buster Peasley’s services. He is a very experienced mooring maintenance expert. He can provide maintenance and repair services from his heavy duty barge, which can lift mushrooms of any size and granite blocks up 1000 lbs. If you did not choose to have work done this year, the Club anticipates having Buster’s services available to members annually to perform this very important service. Please remember, the placement and integrity of moorings continue to be the responsibility of members and annual maintenance is a good way to avoid the problems the Club has seen in the past.

Some key issues the Club faces with an increased membership are parking, tenant charter rules and the guest mooring policy. Space in the parking lot has become increasingly difficult with increased traffic at the Cove. With this in mind, the BOG has begun developing a plan Deer Isle Yacht Club Spring 2008 to improve the parking situation. In addition, I would like to remind members to obtain parking stickers and place them on their vehicles. Parking permits maybe obtained at Maine Camp Outfitters in Sunset (Andy Fuller’s office at the Sunset Post Office). I would also like to remind members of the tenantcharterer rules and guest mooring policies. The Board of Governors has a long-established policy for assessing a tenantcharterer fee for nonmembers who rent a house or charter a boat from a member of the club and who use the Club facilities and participate in the Club activities in the manner of a member. Please be aware that the guest mooring is available for short stays and is suitable for yachts to about 40 feet in length. The Club does not guaranty the adequacy or safety of the mooring.

Lastly, the Board of Governors has begun exploring the feasibility of placing water on the dock. The Club has been debating the merits of this endeavor for along time and the Board of Governors are inclined to pursue it. We will put the matter to a vote at the annual meeting, giving the membership the opportunity to voice its opinion on the matter. If you are unable to attend the annual dinner or have comments on the well and water on the dock issue you may contact me at commodore@deerisleyachtclub.com or at jswakelin1@verizon.net or to any other Board member.

Finally, I write this letter with a touch of sadness at the passing of five very prominent members of the Club. They will be missed, but their spirits will be felt in the environs of the Cove, where I hope to see you in the coming months.
