2010 mooring survey

A primary goal of the Club’s Harbor Committee is to improve the utilization and safe use of the Cove and its facilities for the enjoyment of its members.

One the perennial challenges for everyone is ensuring our moorings are properly maintained and as safe as possible so boats don’t get damaged.

The best way to achieve this is to make sure the information is collected and updated regularly.  The other component is to have a systematic way of helping members maintain their moorings in a cost effective way.

Towards that end, the club is introducing a new system which the Board of Governors has recently voted to implement.

We ask that all mooring owners complete and return the 2010 survey by April 10.

Please be as thorough as possible with the information being requested, but if you don’t know the answer to a question, just leave it blank.

Each mooring will be assigned a number which will end up being placed on the mooring balls along with names as they are now.  This will give us a reference number to help track the location and maintenance history of individual moorings.

You’ll notice that one of the questions asks “Who do you have maintain the mooring?”  The answer to this leads to the second part of the new system, maintenance of moorings.

The club is working with Pearl Hardie and Buster Peasley from Bucks Harbor to provide inspection and repair services for members.

Buster is able to pull, inspect, repair and re-set large moorings all at once.

Pearl will continue to maintain moorings for members with moorings that weigh 150 lbs, or less, if members want him to.

The plan is to have each mooring physically inspected by pulling it to the surface so that all components can be checked and repaired/replaced as needed.

Pearl will work with Buster so that the GPS coordinates and key components of the mooring will be recorded and then checked against the data provided by the members through the survey.  This information will then be entered into the club’s database so it can be tracked going forward.

If Pearl is servicing the mooring, he will record the relevant mooring data when he services them.  For that matter, members can continue to maintain their own moorings but the club is requiring that the relevant data be provided so it can be included in the database.  This will help us head off situations where moorings become unsafe putting life and property potentially at risk.

It is important to note that while the club will help coordinate the activity, the legal contact for services will be between the individual members and Buster or Pearl or whoever is actually doing the work.

Pearl has a GPS the club purchased just for this purpose which members are free to use.  Rates for each person’s services are also shown.

So, what do you need to do?  Here’s a checklist:

  1. Complete the mooring survey.  To complete the survey online, click here.

To download a pdf file you can print complete and mail back, click here.

Remember, it is okay to leave blanks if you don’t know some of the answers.

Also, Pearl is happy to help people answer specific questions about individual moorings if you’re not sure of the physical characteristics of it.  His number is 207-348-6117.

Loring Kydd has graciously volunteered to be the point person for collecting and maintaining the data.  His mailing address is on the survey and his email address is Edgewood_farm@yahoo.com.

  2. Please make sure you provide a day-time or cell number where, if necessary, you can be reached when your mooring is being worked on.

  3. Once the work is completed on your moorings, you will be sent a bill by the provider for the services.  Please make sure the bills are paid within terms.

We are excited to being making this next step. We’ve tried to cover all the bases but there are sure to be some questions.  Feel free to contact Loring if you have any logistical questions.  By having Loring the point person, we can try to minimize misinformation and/or confusion!  His number is 207-348-6612.

Thanks for everyone’s help in making this work!  Here’s to a great season with clear days, cools nights and no fog!
